HOW DOES A PLUG-IN HYBRID WORK?

Our Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV) offers the distinct advantages of using both an electric motor and a petrol engine as power sources. The plug-in hybrid car can run in pure EV mode for up to 65km thanks to its 17.8kWh battery pack. That’s more than enough for most average Australian daily commutes. You can also switch from EV mode to hybrid running based on your driving needs. With the electric motor and petrol engine working all at once, you can expect an exhilarating driving experience. Even if you can’t plug it in, you can complete your journey as long as you have petrol. 


CHARGING your PHEV

Mazda’s PHEV battery can be easily recharged by plugging into an external power supply such as a household socket*, home AC wallbox charger, or a public charging station. Mazda CX-80 PHEV can achieve a full charge in 8.5 hours using a normal household 240V socket or 1.5 hours on an AC charger with a type 2 port (from 20% to 80%). When your battery runs low, the hybrid mode is activated and charges the battery via the petrol engine, maintaining the charge level. And in the case of the Mazda CX-80 PHEV, braking energy is also harvested and used for charging purposes, a concept known as regenerative braking.

Does a plug-in hybrid vehicle recharge while driving?

Yes. Through two ways. The first being via energy generated by the petrol engine. The second being a process known as regenerative braking. Whenever the vehicle brakes, the kinetic energy produced by the braking system generates and stores electricity in the battery pack. This recaptured energy can then be sent back into the powertrain and power a wide range of electrical systems in the vehicle.

Can a plug-in hybrid car run on petrol only?

The Mazda plug-in hybrid doesn’t ever run purely on the petrol engine. The petrol engine will serve as a generator to ensure that the battery pack remains at a minimum state of charge to provide a hybrid drive experience.

How to charge a plug-in hybrid vehicle at home ?

Thanks to its versatile charging port, charging a Mazda plug-in hybrid vehicle from the comfort of your home has never been easier. Owners can simply plug their vehicles into a regular wall socket, with an optional portable charger, to draw electricity directly from the grid (or if you have solar panels, from the clean energy of the sun). If you’re looking for something to get the job done a little quicker, you can install a universal home wall box charger with a type 2 port to deliver a faster supply of power.

How often do I need to charge a PHEV ?

Depending on how often you drive, you might need to charge every night, every few days, or even less frequently. Plug-in and gradually top up the battery when not in use and you are effectively driving an electric vehicle (the average Australian drives just 32km a day). And for those weekends away when your battery runs low, PHEV cars always have the petrol engine to rely on, taking you further on longer trips until you’re ready to recharge once more.

How long does it take to charge a PHEV?

The Mazda plug-in hybrid can achieve a full charge in 5 hours using a normal household 240V socket or around 2.5 hours on an AC charger with a type 2 port.
