In June 2022, Mazda Motor Corporation announced its commitment to making Mazda factories around the world carbon neutral by 2035, marking a major step towards our goal of making the entire Mazda supply chain carbon neutral by 2050.

This announcement is the latest step in our Sustainable Zoom-Zoom 2030 strategy, which is the first stage in our longer-term blueprint for carbon neutrality as a global automaker.

Mazda’s holistic approach to sustainability is simple: we see it as the core responsibility of any automotive manufacturer to do their part in curbing global warming by reducing CO2 emissions in every process of vehicle production from well-to-wheel, including manufacturing, transport, vehicle usage, recycling, and more. As a result, Mazda has been actively engaged in carbon neutral initiatives using its highly effective building-blocks-based approach, a method that is advancing us towards our all-important 2050 target.

The first pillar focuses on energy conservation efforts during vehicle manufacturing processes, which can emit large amounts of CO₂. These efforts include reduction of thermal energy through the development of low-temperature-curing paints, and improvement of energy conversion efficiency by optimising processing technology.

With our second pillar – shifting to renewable energy – Mazda recognises the importance of not only taking steps towards our company’s carbon neutrality, but also the need to contribute to the growth of the local economy. This means we will proactively apply the efforts of the Carbon Neutral Electricity Promotion Subcommittee, which aims to expand the supply and demand of carbon neutral electricity throughout the Chugoku region in Japan. We are also considering various forms of decarbonisation, such as low/carbon-free power generation in our plants and the use of electricity from renewable energy suppliers.

For the introduction of carbon neutral fuels, the third pillar in our initiatives, we will begin by using them for in-house transportation. We will be doing this in cooperation with the Hiroshima Council for Automotive Industry-Academia-Government Collaboration, which is promoting the practical use of next-generation biofuels.

What’s more, we will capitalise on these Japan-based initiatives and use them as a basis to implement the optimal approach for each facility outside Japan.

These efforts are the latest building blocks in Mazda’s first-stage Sustainable Zoom-Zoom 2030 strategy. Through them, we will continue to make steady steps towards the greater challenge of making our whole supply chain carbon neutral by 2050, which will deliver more ecologically built world-class cars to markets such as Australia, and achieve our endeavor to help create a future where we can forever coexist in harmony with our beautiful planet.
