CX-80 TOPS THE CLASS FOR SAFETY

CX-80 TOPS THE CLASS FOR SAFETY

ANCAP and Euro NCAP confirm the Mazda CX-80 is among its top safety performers.

It’s official: the new Mazda CX-80 family SUV is one of the safest cars you can buy today.

The Australasian New Car Assessment Program (ANCAP) and European New Car Assessment Program (Euro NCAP) recently announced their top overall safety performers for 2024.

Both organisations, which awarded the new Mazda CX-80 their full 5-Star safety ratings, confirmed Mazda’s new large SUV is one of the best-performing new cars they tested for crash-related safety during 2024.

Crunching the numbers

To establish the best-performing new vehicles they tested and assessed throughout last year, both organisations used an overall weighting calculation according to these criteria: Adult Occupant Protection, Child Occupant Protection, Vulnerable Road User Protection, and Safety Assist systems.

ANCAP’s overall calculations gave the CX-80 an overall weighted score of 87.6%, less than 1% behind the highest overall weighted ranking.

ANCAP Chief Executive Officer, Carla Hoorweg, said at the January announcement, “The Mazda CX-80 received the second highest Adult Occupant Protection score of 2024 with 92%,” adding it also scored full points in other tests, including side impact, far side impact, whiplash protection and oblique pole crash tests.

Finding the safest performers

Every year, ANCAP and Euro NCAP crash test cars and conduct performance assessments on safety features and technologies. They then publish a simple star rating to indicate to consumers their relative safety performance.

To achieve their maximum five-star safety ratings, a vehicle must perform to the highest level across all key areas of assessment.

Because these star-based safety ratings cannot be compared directly between different vehicle categories – such as small cars and utilities – both organisations use an overall weighting calculation to find its best performers each year.

These safety testing comparisons are made only within a single calendar year due to ever-toughening star rating requirements. This ensures all vehicles are assessed against the same standards.

Family safety in the all-hybrid CX-80

An array of advanced safety technologies contribute to the new CX-80’s 5-Star safety ratings. They include:

  • Smart Brake Support for turning across traffic, for pedestrian and cycle detection, for when reversing, and for Rear Crossing
  • Front Cross Traffic Alert helps drivers when moving into intersections
  • Driver Monitoring and Driver Attention Alert
  • Blind Spot Monitoring with Vehicle Exit Warning
  • Emergency Lane Keeping
  • Adaptive LED headlamps
